TAILGATERS are the bane of our motorways, sitting on our rear bumpers and threatening to run into the back of us the moment we touch the brakes. But the new driverless car will be able to tailgate in complete safety, utilising bat-like sonar technology to maintain a constant minuscule distance behind the vehicle in front. Before setting off on his journey, the car owner will open the Preferences menu on his car’s dashboard smart tablet interface and select his preferred tailgating distance - anything from 1m down to 1/2cm. The sonar sensor, operating at a frequency beyond human hearing, then sets up a feedback loop controlling the throttle and brake, ensuring that the driverless car remains at a constant distance behind the vehicle in front.
