BIRD FANCIERS DESCEND ON CUMBRIAN VILLAGE

HUNDREDS of birdwatchers yesterday descended upon the Cumbrian village of Butterthwaite following the sighting of a rare red-necked grebe.

By mid-morning, around 500 bird enthusiasts – or ‘twitchers’ – had gathered on the village green as word spread that the elusive creature had been spotted on page 235 of The Usborne Book of Birds. The rare avian was first sighted yesterday morning by 62-year-old retired GP Crispin O’Toole as he was flicking through the book in a neighbour’s front room.
