No change in annual bird egg sharpness contest

THE award for Britain’s pointiest birds’ eggs has once again gone to the Guillemot – the 135th victory in a row for the black and white seabird. The annual competition, started in 1891 at the inception of the RSPB, was set up to celebrate the shape of British birds’ eggs. Every year since the first award, the silver and bronze medals have gone to the same two species – the Lapwing and the Golden Plover, and this year is no exception. “I’m absolutely thrilled for the species,” said RSPB chief Charles Ocarina. “Many of us had thought that the lapwing may have just had the edge this year and knocked the Guillemot off its perch, if you’ll forgive the pun.
