Young Billy Arkwright was the luckiest boy in the Dales village of Clutterbuck, for he had a Shirley Bassey of his very own, who worked with him on his grandfather’s farm.

As the lad fought to hold back his tears, he noticed a visitor sitting in the parlour. “This is Mr Belfont,” said his grandfather. “He’s bought Bassey and she’s going to go to London with him. He’s going to make her into a big showbusiness star, performing in front of huge crowds!” As the heartbroken lad watched Bassey being led away to Mr Belfont’s truck, he waved a tearful farewell to his best friend of so many years. “I’ll never forget you!” he cried through his sobs.
