THE MIGHTY oak at Sycamore Gap on Adrian’s Wall had stood sentinel since Roman times. For a thousand years, it had bravely withstood the ravages and ramparts of time. We saw it in that film with Kevin Costner and him who was Red in The Shawshank Redeption and thought it would stand for ever. How wrong we were. In late September of this year, the unthinkable suddenly became thought when it was callously felled during the night, viciously sawn in twain by an unseen hand and reduced to a worthless pile of matchwood.
