DRAUGHTS THROUGHOUT HISTORY

3000BC Draughts is thought to have been invented in Mesopotamia sometime in the third century. Archaeologists have discovered an 8x8 square papyrus board, along with 32 small bone discs, half of them painted black, in the burial chamber of the tomb of King Messanepada. It is thought that the draught-mad monarch took the set to his grave so that he could play his favourite game in the afterlife. The tomb also contained the remains of 100 slaves who were killed so as he had somebody to play against in spirit world. 335AD The Romans brought draughts to Europe from their conquests in Asia, and the craze for the game quickly spread throughout the Empire.
