BRITAIN has for years been a nuclear power. Our formidable arsenal of atomic bombs ensured the UK’s safety throughout the Cold War. But a country’s doomsday weapons can only act as a deterrent if its leader declares they are prepared to use them if necessary. Back in 2019, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn famously refused to give that reassurance in his bid to become PM, and he paid the price at the ballot box.
