DAVE MACKEY UROY: 2011

Being named 2011 UltraRunner of the Year was a once-in-a-lifetime honor that, as years go by, has increased in value. Looking back at the ballot after 10 years, I had set records at Bandera and Waldo 100Ks, and won American River 50, Dick Collins 50, Miwok 100K and finished eighth at Western States. I DNF’d at the UROC 100K due to a bout with bronchitis. Years earlier, in the 2004 voting, I was second by only a few points to Scott Jurek. But I didn’t pay attention back then as I was focused on USATF and the old Montrail Cup Series races, and didn’t even know about UROY until after it was published.
