Commonly perceived as the guilty pleasure of housewives, today’s daytime soap operas entertain millions of viewers globally and are watched by a wide demographic, from the core viewing audience of women, to teenagers and men alike. Here are some fun facts about the world of soaps.

1 Soap operas date back to the 1930s US daytime radio serials where they were sponsored by soap and washing powder manufacturers, such as Procter & Gamble. 2 The ‘soaps’ or novellas, aired during the daytime on major radio stations in the US. The plotlines were so dramatic, they were likened to operas. 3 Soap operas have thousands of episodes, with ongoing storylines that usually take months, even years to play out and resolve. Sometimes they are never fully resolved. 4 Coronation Street is the world’s longest running soap.
