On Feb. 24, 1909, a notorious poacher named Allen Lagrue murdered Charles L. Jordan, the manager of the expansive Morris Game Preserve near Hammond, Louisiana. According to evidence offered at the trial, where Lagrue was sentenced to life in the state penitentiary, Jordan was shot in the back and quite possibly was unaware of his assailant’s presence. A graphic account from The True Democrat, a local newspaper in Bayou Sara, Louisiana, read as follows: “Nineteen murders in 14 months is now the record in ‘Bloody Tangipahoa.’ The latest was the killing from ambush of Charles L.
