These days, the river ride is a staple loop in Brisbane’s cycling scene. The ride has seen many iterations but the essence has remained the same: follow the river. It started in the 80s as a training ride which later came to be known as the Blasters ride – and if you could keep up, you would get to meet its mastermind, Johnny Whip. The Brisbane Blasters were cycling teams that raced between 1985-95. At their peak, they were attracting racers of all shapes and stripes; sprinting into corners, winning numerous races across Australia and flaunting their loud orange and blue jerseys to the annoyance of many.
