It was a very popular establishment especially at the weekends as there was always a different Cabaret of singers or ‘dame artists’ performing on the pub’s small stage - some of the artists were very well known on the circuit. My work at the pub varied depending on the requirements of the two landlords. On barbecue days I was a uniformed waitress, at other times I was a barmaid (the Duchess behind the bar in photo 1), in the early mornings I was the char-woman, cleaning up after the previous evening’s performers, and of course, when appropriate, the “Necessary Woman “who cleaned the pub toilets.
