In association with DAY 3 9 NY433198 Descend Hallin Fell back to St Peter's Church in Martindale. Pass to the right of the church, through a car park, and climb south-east up a grassy hillock. Veer north-east traversing the hillside to the base of Steel End ridge. Descend east to cross a road and small stone footbridge over a stream. Turn left along a grassy path, go through a gate, turn right along a driveway, and – opposite the white house at Mellguards – turn left through another gate. Take the path north, skirting the base of Bonscale Pike's western flanks. Pass a couple of stone barns and, at a fingerpost sign, fork right marked ‘Pooley Bridge via Barton Fell’.
