Big views. Big skies. And – apart from the plaintive call of golden plovers and the occasional jarring cackle of grouse – big silence. The expansive moorland of Mallerstang, straddling Cumbria's border with North Yorkshire, is a place apart. This is somewhere you come to escape; to shut out the babble and open your mind to… well, whatever's out there. There's plenty of opportunity for just that on this long walk between stations on the Settle to Carlisle line. Starting from Garsdale, it uses the Pennine bridleway to reach the high ground. Passing close to the sources of both the River Ure and the River Eden, it follows England's watershed over High Seat (709m) and High Pike Hill (642m).
