Wonderful coastal scenery in Devon, with many beaches, coves and historic sites, made all the more memorable by a return by steam railway.

Choose a clear day to enjoy the superb coastal views on this stimulating walk. Begin at Kingswear Station, beautifully restored in period Great Western Railway style, and return by the wonderfully scenic Dartmouth Steam Railway. Part of the main network between 1864 and 1972, it includes the 106m-long Hookhills Viaduct and the 454m Greenway Tunnel, plus coastal and riverside embankments. Parts of the coastal path also give lineside views of the trains. There is much of interest besides, including 15 varied coves and beaches, many of which were notorious smugglers’ haunts in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The route offers a fine view of Kingswear and Dartmouth medieval castles, built opposite each other to protect the strategically vital harbour.
