It's the hillwalker's dream, isn't it? To gain the high ground and stay up there for as long as possible. If that's what you seek, and you have the stamina, look no further than the end-to-end hike of the Helvellyn range. Starting from the 726m top of Clough Head in the north, stretching to Dollwaggon Pike (858m) in the south and, of course, taking in the 950m summit of England's third highest mountain, this 12km line of summits never drops below 620m. In fact, it hovers around the 750m mark for much of the time, making it one of the best and longest tracts of sustained high level walking in the Lake District.
