Earlier this year, a leading market research report revealed that the UK's sporting and outdoor equipment retail industry is worth about £11.2 billion. Now, that figure includes sportswear and sports equipment as well as outdoor gear. But there's no getting away from the fact that it's still a heck of a lot of outdoor apparel and equipment.
This begs the question: should we really be buying so much stuff? After all, the global textile industry is responsible for major environmental issues including water pollution, microfibre shedding, greenhouse gas emissions and millions of tonnes of landfill waste. Annual consumption of clothing in the UK alone produces 1.8 million tonnes of waste, and 38 million tonnes of CO2.
