With the days drawing out and the weather improving, more and more people start heading for the hills – making spring a busy time for Mountain Rescue volunteers. Follow their simple advice to help you avoid problems and make the most of being back in the great outdoors!

PREPARE FOR WINTER ON THE TOPS In the spring, the temperature and wind strength differences between the valley and the tops can be at their greatest, as damp paths in the valley can become icy rock steps higher up. Unfortunately, standard weather forecasts are generally more accurate for the valleys and can give a false sense of security. Instead, look out for the Mountain Weather Information Service [mwis.org.uk] online, and often in Tourist Information Centre or hostel windows. It will give you details specific to where you are, and an indication of wind strength and ground conditions on the tops.
