A LIFE ON FOOT

Explorer Levison Wood has forged a life walking, following traditional trails, rivers and elephants on journeys thousands of miles long. Here he speaks to Trail about his earliest walks, the importance of optimism and why he doesn't carry a map.

Ostensibly, Levison Wood lives in London, but really, he lives on his feet. It's hard to definitively locate a man who, over the course of his 40 years, has walked more than 13,000 miles across more than 120 different countries and who counts friendships across the continents as among his most enduring. For most, he came to attention with his recordsetting attempt to walk the Nile, the world's longest river, from the Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda to the Mediterranean Sea.
