LAKE DISTRICT Pike o’ Stickle This proud, round-headed lump of fell is one of the most identifiable sights in all of Lakeland, acting like a huge, craggy faced ‘You Are Here’ arrow for the Great Langdale valley. As an aside, purists will tell you that you shouldn't refer to the ‘Langdale valley’. They'll point out that Langdale means ‘Long Valley’ in Old Norse, so you're effectively calling it the Long Valley valley. It is, they will tell you, a tautology. Well, so is Pike o’ Stickle. In landscape terms a ‘pike’ refers to a mountain or hill with a peaked or pointed summit. And ‘stickle’ refers to a hill with a prominent rocky top. Which makes Pike o’ Stickle the ‘Hill with a Pointed Summit of a Prominent Rocky Top.’ Or something…
