Spring is easily my favourite time of the year in the mountains, but the problem is I'm not on my own. The secret's well and truly out that long days, warm weather, green landscapes and explosive birdsong make for truly excellent walking conditions – and as a result, the highest and most popular paths and summits start to draw fairly chunky crowds. So how do you get around it? The answer is to set your alarm early, drag yourself out of bed before sunrise, and get up there before everyone else. The photo above was taken on the Beacons Way just after daybreak (see page 38), with dawn shadows stretching across layer upon layer of empty hills.
