For a mountain often seen as little more than a hanger-on to its bigger north Wales neighbour, Y LLIWEDD is a summit that demands to be climbed; not least because it’s nearly all ridge.

KEY FACTS Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is not a mountain that’s short on ridges. From its summit hub they spoke out in nearly every direction. Crib Goch is certainly its most dramatic, and for walkers the South Ridge is hard to beat. But for something that carries a little less sheer exposure than the former, but with more scrambling thrills than the latter, there’s one ridge we’re especially fond of. To give it its full due, Y Lliwedd is a peak in its own right. Two, in fact – a West Peak and an East Peak. But it’s also a deliciously sculpted ridge that ripples and writhes away from the eastern side of Yr Wyddfa’s summit cone like a whip mid crack.
