The Rhinogydd range marks the western fortress of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) before the sea at Tremadoc Bay. Rough, pathless terrain and awkward navigation means walking here lacks the convenience of the more popular areas of the park. But for those willing to put the effort in, the rewards are many. This walk may be short but it’s an adventure, setting out up the famous Roman Steps – thought, in fact, to be a medieval packhorse route – and passing pretty Llyn Du before clambering across the vast heathery, bouldery flanks of Rhinog Fawr.
