Come the glory months of high summer, there’s a creature that lives the life we all dream of… whiling away the days high in the mountains of Scotland. That creature also survives the winter, spring and autumn and it does so, just like us, by changing its coats. This special creature is, of course, the mountain hare.
Mountain hares are actually known by many names: snow hare, tundra hare, Irish hare, variable hare and, at this time of year, the blue hare. High summer is the time when a mountain hare wears its blue/grey coat of finer, shorter fur, keeping it cooler and blending in with rocky terrain. Late autumn into winter the hare moults into the white coat of ermine, with just the tips of the ears remaining black. Camouflage…
