No renewable energy source available to us is as abundant as solar energy. Nature harnessed sunlight more than 2 billion years ago when it invented photosynthesis. Humans, on the other hand, are still in the early stages of harnessing solar energy. The photovoltaic effect was discovered in 1839 by Alexandre Edmond Becquerel. Yet in 2020, solar photovoltaic accounted for only about 3 percent of global electricity generation. Man made use of the power of the wind as early as 5000 BC. First to propel boats, then increasingly to drive grain mills and water pumps. Our modern windmills harvest clean electricity and contribute to about a quarter of the world’s renewable energy production.
