Chris has come to a shock conclusion: going for the ultimate iteration of a car may not be the best option

We live in a world of blurred boundaries and confusing overlap. No one knows what a thing is supposed to be any more; because everything wants to be everything. And by that I mean every sports car wants to comfortable and usable, and every off-roader wants to be a sports car, and every hot hatch wants to outgun a super-saloon. Cars always mirror the societal conditions in which they were created, so it’s no surprise we currently have a heap of machinery with unrealistic expectations of what it might be capable of being. Take the Mercedes-AMG A45 S. On paper, this should be my favourite car ever – loving, as I do, anything that is compact, usable and all-weather fast. But the A45 has overreached itself.
