Don’t run before you can walk. Do the easy thing first, then tackle the harder task when you’re good and ready. It’s what we do, and most new gadgetry follows the same path, beginning with the basics and moving onwards only when the hardware and software have matured. No point streaming HD movies over dial-up internet.
Self-driving cars are different. Their basic task will actually become easier some years after introduction, when they’ve become widespread. Robo-cars will cooperate seamlessly with all their robo-fellows. They’ll behave towards one another in predictable protocols. Call it not just the Highway Code, but a kind of AI etiquette.
