SOCCER On October 7, the Portland Thorns beat Gotham FC, 1–0, to secure a spot in the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League) playoffs. Hina Sugita headed in the goal for the Thorns. Also that day, soccer legend Megan Rapinoe played her final home match for the OL Reign. The match against the Washington Spirit ended in a draw, but it was a big win for the NWSL: 34,130 fans were in attendance, a league record. DISTANCE RUNNING Kelvin Kiptum from Kenya won the Chicago Marathon on October 8 with a time of 2:00:35, a marathon world record.
