About 90% of the world’s pink diamonds come from one source—the Argyle Mine in Western Australia—and scientists now know why. The colorful gems were pushed to the surface when a supercontinent (ancient landmass that took up most of Earth) named Nuna broke apart about 1.3 billion years ago. For many years, scientists thought the Argyle formation was about 1.2 billion years old, which meant it didn’t exist until after Nuna had broken up. But recently, a team of researchers in Australia used modern laser technology to reassess Argyle’s age. They found that it was actually about 1.3 billion years old, meaning it was created when Nuna was breaking up. Pink diamonds are among the rarest on Earth.
