Devils Postpile National Monument, California

This area was once part of Yosemite National Park but was established as a separate national monument in 1911. Devils Postpile is a striking formation made up of columns of volcanic rock, formed 80,000 to 100,000 years ago, which stand up to 60 feet high. About 115 bird species and several mammals, including black bears, pine martens, coyotes, and brush mice, live in the surrounding wilderness. Visitors can hike to Rainbow Falls, named as such because rainbows are visible in the mist on clear, sunny days.…
