“Genius grants” awarded to 20 people

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced the 20 people who will be named MacArthur fellows for 2023. Also known as “genius grants,” MacArthur fellowships are awarded to Americans who have demonstrated “exceptional creativity” and have the potential to do more. Each of the 2023 MacArthur fellows will receive a grant of $800,000. The MacArthur Foundation was established in 1970 and is based in Chicago, Illinois. Since the fellows program began in 1981, between 20 and 30 new fellows have been selected every year. Potential fellows do not apply but are nominated and endorsed by their peers and communities.
