Diwali celebrations begin

The Hindu festival of Diwali (pronounced de-VAAL-ee) is set to begin on October 29. Also known as the festival of lights, Diwali marks the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. It is celebrated by more than a billion people worldwide who follow the Hindu religion, as well as people who follow the religions of Sikhism, Jainism, and Buddhism. Diwali traditions vary across religions and regions. For example, many people in the south of India tell the story of Lord Krishna, who overcame a demon. In northern India, people mark the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana after 14 years in exile. Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists honor important leaders.
