New image from space
The James Webb Space Telescope has unveiled a new image depicting the “Pillars of Creation.” These are large columns of gas and dust where new stars often form. They are situated in a part of space called the Eagle Nebula, which is in the Milky Way galaxy, about 6,500 light years away. Launched in December 2021, the Webb telescope is operated by NASA (the US space agency) and partners, and it is the most powerful telescope ever put into space. The first image of the Pillars of Creation was captured by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope in 1995. In that image, they appear largely as solid columns, with little to be seen beyond gas and dust.
