Change in UK’s top leadership

On October 20, UK prime minister (similar to a president) Liz Truss announced her resignation after 44 days in office. Rishi Sunak took over the top job on October 25, making him the UK’s third prime minister in seven weeks. Truss, age 47, took office on September 6, replacing Boris Johnson as head of the Conservative Party. In the UK, citizens don’t vote for the prime minister directly. Instead, the political party with the most members in Parliament (similar to Congress) gets to choose a party leader, who becomes prime minister. During her short term, Truss proposed unpopular economic policies to fight rising costs in the UK. This caused the economy to suffer, which resulted in her party calling for her resignation.
