British Columbia, Canada Humpback whale freed from fish nets A humpback whale entangled in 300 feet of fishing nets was rescued near Texada Island. A marine mammal rescue team worked from boats for close to five hours to carefully cut the rope loose. The whale then stuck its head out of the water and did a backflip (a rare move called spy-hopping), which freed the rope, and swam off with other whales. The team reported they were “overwhelmed with just happiness.” Siurana, Spain Village stays out of the spotlight The stunning mountaintop village of Siurana, which has a population of 27 people, was selected to be on Spain’s “most beautiful” list—but the town has declined the honor.
