Petitioning on behalf of salamanders

“I am a fourth grader at Powell Elementary School in Washington, DC. During the pandemic, when it was boring, we went herping in Rock Creek Park. Herping is looking for reptiles and amphibians. We found red-backed salamanders. My mom thought that if there wasn’t an official amphibian for Washington, DC, why not the red-backed salamander? I made a petition and my friends signed it. My teacher, Ms. Pence, helped us write the resolution and prepared us to testify in front of the DC Council. Staff members from the Council also came to our school to teach us about how to make a bill.
