Hungry astronauts could soon be sipping on milkshakes made from asteroids—rocky objects in space that orbit the Sun. Although astronauts have tried growing lettuce leaves on the International Space Station, almost all the food eaten in space is transported from Earth. Now scientists are looking for alternative sources of space food. Bacteria would be used to convert carbon from asteroids into food, resulting in a nutritionally balanced meal that looks similar to a caramel milkshake.
