Louisiana judge blocks controversial law

A federal judge has blocked a new law in Louisiana that would require the Ten Commandments, which are religious directives from the Bible, to be posted in public classrooms. The judge ruled that the state law violates the Constitution (highest law in the US), which prohibits the government from promoting religion. What is the background on the law?
