Painting restoration begins

A museum in the Netherlands is restoring one of the world’s most famous paintings and inviting the public to watch. Visitors to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam can observe through a glass wall as conservation experts work on The Night Watch, painted in 1642 by celebrated Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669). To prepare for the artwork’s restoration, called “Operation Night Watch,” museum officials spent five years analyzing the massive oil painting, which is 15 feet wide and 12½ feet high, with high-tech scans and other methods. On November 12, eight experts wearing masks and gloves began gently removing a varnish (clear, hard protective coating) from the painting.
