Global measles cases on the rise

On November 14, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said there were about 10.3 million measles cases worldwide in 2023, up from about 8.7 million in 2022. About 107,500 people, mostly children, died from measles in 2023. Falling vaccination rates caused the 20% spike in cases. Measles is a highly contagious but preventable disease that can have serious complications, particularly for babies, children, and people with existing medical problems. A two-dose vaccine prevents measles, but in 2023, more than 22 million children worldwide did not get it. About 83% of children received the first dose, and about 74% received the second dose. The drop in vaccination rates is due to problems with distribution and access to the vaccine in many countries.…
