Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

This group of 19 islands, spread across 23,000 square miles of ocean, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been called a “living museum.” The Galápagos’ unique wildlife inspired British naturalist Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution (development of animals and plants slowly over time) and changed the way we think about life on Earth. The islands are a habitat for animals that can’t be found anywhere else, such as Galápagos giant tortoises, which are some of the largest tortoises in the world.
