Should hotels ban single-use toiletries?

Some people love those tiny bottles, but others say they’re bad for the planet.

When you check into a hotel room, it’s fun to find a collection of personal-size toiletries waiting for you. They’re cute and convenient—but that comes at a cost. Plastic waste is a huge problem for our planet, and every year, about 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean. Some people say getting rid of small single-use toiletries would make a difference. Starting in January 2025, New York state is banning them in hotels that have more than 50 rooms, and Washington will enforce a similar rule in 2027. California has already enacted a ban.
