Working dogs and their jobs

From their earliest days as hunting partners, dogs have helped humans function. Here are three types of dogs that are trained to serve in important jobs.

Guide dogs Also called service dogs, these dogs are trained to help people with disabilities. For instance, seeing-eye dogs help people who are vision-impaired get around safely. Medical-alert dogs comfort people who are having a seizure. Therapy dogs People in stressful situations may get emotional support from therapy dogs. The dogs often visit hospitals to comfort both patients and workers. Therapy dogs also visit schools, helping students focus or even learn. They also help people in nursing homes and airports. Search dogs Dogs’ powerful sense of smell makes them ideal for finding survivors in search-and-rescue operations, such as after a natural disaster.
