Donkeys were not just reliable work animals—they were also used to play donkey polo in ancient China. Scientists discovered donkey bones in the tomb of a Chinese noblewoman named Cui Shi, who died in the year 878. Polo was popular at the time and usually played on horses. Because horses were larger and could be dangerous, though, some people preferred to play on donkeys. Chinese people at that time believed they would have another life after death, and it was common for them to be buried with objects or animals they wanted to take with them. Researchers think Cui Shi played donkey polo and wanted to be buried with her donkeys so she could keep playing the game in the afterlife.…
