Native American Heritage Month begins

November 1 marked the beginning of National Native American Heritage Month. The month celebrates Native and Indigenous peoples, the groups of people who were the first to inhabit America. The effort to set time aside to honor Native Americans began in 1916, when the first American Indian Day was celebrated in New York. (American Indian is another name for Native American.) Red Fox James, a member of the Blackfeet Nation, rode across the US on horseback seeking approval from 24 state governments to have a day to honor American Indians, according to the Census Bureau (US agency that records data about American people).
