The Ig Nobel Prizes might be funny and playful, but they’re named after an important set of awards: the Nobel Prizes, which are among the world’s most prestigious honors. The name Ig Nobel is a play on the word “ignoble,” which means humble or lowly. The Nobel Prizes were created by Swedish inventor, scientist, and businessman Alfred Nobel in the categories of chemistry, physics, physiology or medicine, literature, economics, and peace. The first Nobel Prizes were given out in 1901. Alfred Nobel wanted the awards to honor people whose work offers “the greatest benefit on mankind,” according to the Nobel Foundation, which oversees them.…
