Homo sapiens (modern humans) first appeared in Africa about 300,000 years ago. Then, about 70,000 years ago, some of them left Africa. About 25,000 years later, Homo sapiens started to settle in Europe and Asia. Until recently, however, no one knew where or how they lived after leaving Africa. Researchers now think they have figured out where these ancient humans were. To find out, scientists compared modern and ancient human DNA. (DNA is the chemical that carries information about how a living thing grows, and ancient DNA can be found in the remains of animals and plants.)
