Famous mosaic revealed

Researchers in Italy are learning about the ancient Roman empire through the study of a famous artwork depicting Alexander the Great. Alexander was a king and military genius and one of history’s greatest conquerors. The art, known as a mosaic, is 2,000 years old and was rescued from the floor of a mansion in the ruins of Pompeii. It is made up of about 2 million pieces of stone, ceramic, and glass. The National Archaeological Museum of Naples began a restoration and analysis of the Alexander mosaic in 2020. Among other facts, they have learned that stones in the piece came from across Europe and North Africa. Experts believe the mosaic depicts the Battle of Issus in 333 BCE, when Alexander, shown holding a long spear, conquered a Persian army.…
