Alaska drilling project moves ahead

President Joe Biden’s administration has approved a controversial oil drilling project, known as the Willow project, in Alaska. Energy industry officials support it, while others say the project would harm the environment. What is the project? The Willow project, proposed by the oil company ConcocoPhillips in 2020, would extract up to 600 million barrels of oil over 30 years from an additional part of the National Petroleum Reserve. This is an area in the north of Alaska owned by the federal government. After conducting an environmental analysis, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM, US agency that protects land) recommended scaling back from five to three drill sites and building fewer roads and airstrips.
