Impressionists painted air pollution
Impressionist painters Claude Monet and J.M.W. Turner showed air pollution in their work, according to a new study. Impressionism was a style of art that mostly portrayed outdoor scenes with dabs of paint that conveyed the changing nature of light, color, and texture. Turner (1775–1851) was from the UK, while Monet (1840–1926) was from France. They lived during the Industrial Revolution (1760–1840), when Europe started using machines for manufacturing and pollution from factories began to fill the air. Scientists studied changes in the style and color of the artists’ work as air pollution increased. They found that the colors became whiter. The skies looked hazier, and objects in the distance became harder to recognize. “Over the 19th century, the atmospheric reality in London and Paris changed,” the study authors said.…
